6 Retro-Chic Hotspots in Seoul for a Perfect Day Trip

Seoul retro alley and old-signboard scene (overall theme)

6 Retro-Chic Hotspots in Seoul
for a Perfect Day Trip

Every era has its own gathering spots. Where a bright signboard on the main street once marked the place to be, nowadays it's a small door tucked down a side alley. Old warehouses and ironworks, faded printing districts and a disused rail line — spaces that once seemed to have outlived their purpose are now known as Seoul's retro hotspots. What all these neighborhoods share is a new kind of taste layered gently on top of the past, without erasing its traces. Starting at the bookshop alley of Yeonnam-dong, the route continues through a market in Mangwon, an ironworks alley in Mullae, a retro café in Euljiro, and a cavernous warehouse café in Seongsu, before ending on a hill in Hannam-dong — shall we walk this subway-linked day course together?

PICK 1 A Street Where Books Run Instead of Trains, Yeonnam-dong's Gyeongui Line Book Street

Gyeongui Line Book Street promenade

Step out of Exit 6 at Hongik University Station (홍대입구역) and a narrow, green promenade stretches out before you. This used to be the Gyeongui Line railway, but after the trains stopped running, the site was turned back into a park — now a walking path lined with bookshops, boutiques, and open-air cafés. A railway became a path for people. Along the promenade sits 'Bookshop Lisboa Porto,' a space that feels as if an old European bookshelf had been transplanted whole, where you can sit outside under a blue-striped awning and turn pages over a cup of coffee.

Take your time strolling past each shop's different window display, and before you know it your pace will slow right down. This is a gentle way to start a Seoul hip-place course.

📍Address
  • 경의선책거리(Gyeongui Line Book Street): 서울특별시 마포구 와우산로35길(연남동 경의선숲길 내)
🕐Hours
  • Open at all times, no closed days (individual shops vary)
🚇Getting there
  • Hongik University Station (홍대입구역, Line 2·Gyeongui–Jungang·AREX) Exit 6, 1–3 min walk
PICK 2 An Old Market Crowded with Young Footsteps, Mangwon Market

Mangwon Market arcade alley

Five minutes on foot from Exit 2 of Mangwon Station, people flow in like a tide under the narrow arcade roof. It's a traditional market that has held this spot for decades, but lately it's being rediscovered by a younger crowd. The smell of old-style fried whole chicken mixes with the sweet scent of freshly baked desserts in the same alley. As you walk through, there's golden, crisply fried bindae-tteok at 'Hooni's Bindae-tteok,' crunchy, sweet-and-spicy fried chicken at 'Mangwon Dakgangjeong,' and a hearty toast at 'Isaac Toast' — plenty of fun in picking whatever catches your eye.

There's no fixed menu here — simply walking the alley and stopping wherever a shop catches your eye is part of how to enjoy this market.

📍Address
  • 망원시장(Mangwon Market): 서울특별시 마포구 포은로6길 27, 1층
🕐Hours
  • 10:00–20:00, open every day (individual shops' hours may vary)
🚇Getting there
  • Mangwon Station (망원역, Line 6) Exit 2, 5 min walk
PICK 3 Where Paintings Hang Beside the Sound of Ironworks, Mullae Art Village

Mullae Art Village shutter mural

Walk a few alleys out from Mullae Station and rows of low, metal shutter doors come into view. This has been an ironworks alley for nearly 60 years, where metal has been cut and welded — but somewhere along the way, murals began appearing on those shutters, and small galleries and workshops moved into the alleyways. The sight of machine noise and paintings sharing the same space feels strangely unfamiliar. Follow the 'Gallery Mullae' alley and you'll find a mural street linking several galleries, and at 'Sulsul Center,' which opened in 2021, you can try out facilities like an open lounge and 3D printers for free.

Skip picking a fixed route and simply walk wherever your feet take you — you'll run into murals and sculptures you never expected. It's worth trusting your footsteps more than the map here.

📍Address
  • 문래창작촌(Mullae Art Village): 서울특별시 영등포구 문래동 2~3가 일대
🕐Hours
  • Open at all times
🚇Getting there
  • Mullae Station (문래역, Line 2) and the surrounding area
PICK 4 A Retro Café Left Behind by the Printing District, Euljiro's 'Coffee Hanyakbang'

Coffee Hanyakbang interior

Turn through a few narrow alleys from Euljiro 3(sam)-ga Station and the sign for 'Coffee Hanyakbang' comes into view. This neighborhood once packed in printing shops and tool markets around Sewoon Arcade, Korea's first mixed-use residential-commercial building from the 1960s. As the commercial district declined, empty storefronts piled up for a while — but in recent years, the area has been rediscovered under the nickname 'Hip-jiro' and is drawing in a younger crowd. Step through the door and the mother-of-pearl furniture and old tiled floor create an atmosphere that feels as if time had turned back to Korea's early modern enlightenment era.

Pick up a cup of hand-drip coffee on the first floor and take it up to the second-floor terrace — the view over the narrow alley rooftops reveals another face of Euljiro's Hip-jiro. Take a moment to rest in this space that feels like it has slipped back through time.

📍Address
  • 커피한약방(Coffee Hanyakbang): 서울특별시 중구 삼일대로12길 16-6
🕐Hours
  • Weekdays 10:00–22:00 (last order 21:00) | Saturday 11:00–22:00 | Sunday 11:00–20:00
🚇Getting there
  • Euljiro 3(sam)-ga Station (을지로3가역), Exit 1, about 3 min walk
PICK 5 A Rice Mill Turned Café, Seongsu-dong's 'Daelim Changgo'

Daelim Changgo interior

Head over from Seongsu Station and a massive building comes into view, its red brick and concrete frame left exactly as it was. This spot was once a rice mill and warehouse from the 1970s. Today it stands as 'Daelim Changgo,' a fixture on every list of Seongsu-dong café recommendations. Step into the soaring, open interior and the old warehouse's structural frame is left fully exposed — you can feel every bit of the time this place has lived through.

With a cup of geisha drip brewed from specialty beans in front of you, look up at the high ceiling and you'll realize that, instead of grain, it's now people's stories filling this warehouse.

📍Address
  • 대림창고(Daelim Changgo): 서울특별시 성동구 성수이로 78
🕐Hours
  • 11:00–22:00 (last order 21:30), same hours every day
🚇Getting there
  • Seongsu Station (성수역, Line 2) Exit 3
PICK 6 A Hill That Closes Out the Day,
Hannam-dong's 'Sounds Hannam'

Sounds Hannam exterior

From Exit 3 of Itaewon Station, follow Daesagwan-ro up a gentle hill and 'Sounds Hannam' appears, its low buildings stepping upward in tiers. It's a mixed-use cultural complex where residences and offices, concept stores, galleries, and cafés all flow naturally along a single path. It's worth slowing your pace here — browse the shelves at the four-story bookstore 'Steel Books,' or take in the works on view at the 'Gana Art Hannam' gallery. It's striking just how much density this quiet hilltop holds.

Wander past the shops lighting up one by one and take your very last steps of the day.

📍Address
  • 사운즈한남(Sounds Hannam): 서울특별시 용산구 대사관로 35(한남동)
🕐Hours
  • Varies by shop
🚇Getting there
  • Itaewon Station (이태원역, Line 6) Exit 3, about 840 m

New spaces keep layering onto the texture of old neighborhoods — that was the common thread running through the six places on today's walk. A rail line became a park, an ironworks became a gallery, a rice mill became a café, and yet the time that each place has lived through was never erased. Why not go find these expressions you won't find on any map, and walk these alleys for yourself?
